It gives me immense pleasure to inform you that on 20th February 2011, Nagpurians are going to get blessed with the presence of Parampujya Gurudev Sri Sri Ravishankar ji – The founder of ‘The Art of Living Foundation’– one of the world’s largest volunteer based, humanitarian and educational Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO), operating globally in 151 countries.

A unique and grand musical event named ‘Lay Tarang’ – a spiritual confluence of singing, dancing and music with 3000 artists on one stage has been organized by the Art of Living Nagpur in honour of His visit. The event is of such a magnitude that it may end up creating a new Guinness World record. On the top of it Shri Shankar Mahadevan will appear as a special singer for the event. The event is organized not with the intention of creating world records but only with the idea of providing one platform to the artists and musicians of Vidarbha to do something meaningful and value in their life. The event will be telecast live with a link to watch in 150 countries. So catch me LIVE. Repeat telecasts are also expected in future.

                                                         Mohammed Rafi (December 24, 1924 – July 31, 1980) was one of the most versatile Indian playback singer who sang in many Indian languages including Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi, Telugu,Bengali, Marathi and Kannada.

                                          Rafi was born at Kotla Sultan Singh (or Kotla Sultanpur), a town near Amritsar in Punjab. His nickname was Pheeko. His first public performance came at the age of 13 in a concert featuring the great  K.L.Saigal.Rafi made his debut as a playback singer in the duet “Soniye nee, Heeriye nee” with Zeenat Begum in the Punjabi film Gul Baloch in the year 1942.  Rafi has sang a total of 149 songs (81 of them solo) for Naushad. Also,he has a total of 341 numbers (216 solo) for Shankar-Jaikishan. For Laxmikant Pyarelal,Rafi sang a total of 369 numbers (186 solo).                                                                                                            It has been claimed that Rafi has recorded 28,000 songs in 11 Indian languages between 1944 and April 1980. According to the available figures, Rafi has sung 4,516 Hindi film songs, 112 non-Hindi film songs, and 328 private (non-film) songs from 1945 to 1980.

                                          Rafi had charged a fee of one rupee and sang for a minor composer, Nisar Bazmi who  did not have enough money to pay him.

  • Honoured with the Padmashri by the Government of India in 1965.
  • National Award for Best Male Playback Singer for Neel Kamal composed by Ravi Shankar in 1968.
  • National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer for the song “Kya Hua Tera Wada” from the film Hum Kisi Se Kum Nahin, composed by RD Burman, lyrics by Majrooh Sultanpuri in 1977.
  • Filmfare Best Male Playback Award for “Chaudhvin Ka Chand Ho” in the film Chaudhvin Ka Chand  in 1960.
  • Filmfare Best Male Playback Award for “Teri Pyaari Pyaari Surat Ko” in the film Sasural in 1961.
  • Filmfare Best Male Playback Award for “Chahunga Mein Tujhe” in the film Dosti in 1964.
  • Filmfare Best Male Playback Award for “Baharo Phool Barsao” in the film Suraj in 1966.
  • Filmfare Best Male Playback Award for “Dil Ke Jharoke Mein” in the film Brahmachari in 1968.
  • Filmfare Best Male Playback Award for “Kya Hua Tera Vaada” in the film Hum Kisi Se Kum Nahin in 1977.
  • First National Award for the song Babul Ki Duaen Leti Ja from the film Neel Kamal (1968).
  • In 1948, Rafi received a silver medal from Nehru on the Indian Independence Day.
  • Won the Film World magazine Best Singer Award for the song “Teree Galiyon Mein Na Rakhenge Qadam Aaj Ke Baad” (Hawas) composed by Usha Khanna in 1974.
  • Best Male Playback Singer for Dosti in 1965.

Allah Rakha Rahman was born on January 6, 1967 in Chennai,Tamil Nadu,India. His occupation includes film composer, record producer,musician and a singer. His debut soundtrack for Roja was listed in TIME‘s “10 Best Soundtracks” in 2005 and instantly delivered him his first National Film Award..

In 1997 he made an album Vande Mataram on India’s 50th anniversary of independence .Rahman has performed with Michael Jackson in Germany in 1997.

Awards and Achievements:

· Recipient of the Mauritius National Award and the Malaysian Award for contributions to music.

· Nominated for a Laurence Olivier Award for 1st West-End production.

· 4-time National Film Award winner.

· Conferred the Padma Shri from the Govt. of India.

Simply Sonu…

Sonu Nigam is a renowned Indian playback singer. He was born on July 30, 1973 in Faridabad, Haryana,

to Agam Kumar Nigam and Shobha Nigam. His father Agam Kumar was a popular stage singer in North India.

Sonu attended DJ Tyler School in Faridabad. His father was his first music trainer.

He has also learnt music from Ustad Mohammad Tahir in Delhi.

Sonu set foot on the stage at the age of three. Sonu’s first public performance was with his father.

Accompanied his father and sang the Mohammed Rafi song Kya Hua Tera Vaada from the movie Hum Kisise Kum Nahin.

Acted in movies like Kaamchor (1982), Ustadi Ustad Se (1982), Hum Se Hai Zamana (1983), Taqdeer (1983) and Betaab (1983)

as a child artist.

Came to Mumbai at the age of 18 and started joined a distance learning graduate program.

He started his career singing covers of Mohammad Rafi songs. His first movie as a playback singer was the film Janum (1990).

First big break came with the 1996 film Bewafa Sanam in which he sang the song “Accha Sila Diya Tune”.

Later he hosted ‘Mohammad Rafi ”, a singing competition on Zee TV which made him popular.

The songs like “Sandeshe Aate Hai” from the film Border (1997) and “Yeh Dil Deewana” from the film Pardes (1997) sung by

him made him famous among the public.

In addition to many Hindi movies, Sonu has also sung for Tamil and Kannada movies.

Sonu won his first Filmfare Best Male Playback Singer Award in 2003 for the film Saathiya.
Also released several pop albums of his own including Kismat (1998), Mausam (1999), Deewana (1999), Jaan (2000), Yaad (2001), Chanda Ki Doli (2005) etc.

Hosted the show ‘Kisme Kitna Hai Dum’ on Star Plus and a radio programme called ‘Life Ki Dhun with Sonu Nigam’ on Radiocity 91 FM.

Was one of the judges of the first and second seasons of Indian Idol, a singing competition on Sony Entertainment Television channel.

Acted in various Bollywood films like Jaani Dushman (2002), Kash Aap Hamare Hote (2003), Love In Nepal (2004) etc.

Got married to Madhurima on February 15, 2002 and has one son called Neevan.

Was one of the judges of the show Sa Re Ga Ma Pa L’IL Champs 2007 on Zee TV.
